Nurture new roots for your future

Coleus

I am not a gardener.  I actually have 2 brown thumbs.   Although this past spring, I made a little effort to clean up my yard and plant a few things.

I read that Coleus were hard to kill which makes them perfect for me.  The price tag and variety at the local garden center made it difficult to bypass.

As I was watching all if the leaves start to turn brown on the trees, I got the urge to try to bring some of the coleus inside to start new plants.

Here they are, a few pieces from all of the different varieties waiting in water for roots to grow to spend the next 2 seasons inside.

Maybe we should all take some time to think about how we want to grow and start nurturing the roots of our future selves now!

Wild can be wonderful!

I took a step into my backyard today and saw all of this wonderful wildness growing.   Last spring, I decided that I was going to change my 2 brown thumbs green.   I went crazy buying plants and bulbs and doing yardwork.   For a couple of weeks.   Then I got distracted by other things.

I have quite a few lovely plants in my yard but I have a lot more of these wonderfully wild ones!

I am taking a lesson from nature and I suggest everyone do a little of this too.   There is a time for planning, but there is also a time for letting things grow on there own.   Embrace the wild and wonderful that happens in your life when you simply LIVE.

Sharing our joy or taunting our friends?

Tiramisu

I was out with a few friends yesterday and decided to splurge on tiramisu for dessert.   I, like so many people I know, pulled out my camera phone to share this on Facebook before even taking a bite.

What I honestly don’t know is why do we do this?   My first thought was that my mom would love it because its her favorite.   But why share with everyone and not just her?  For that matter, how will a picture of my dessert that she can’t smell or taste improve her day?

At least she would know that I was thinking of her.  As for the rest of my friends, I’m gonna go with…. They will know that I am enjoying my life to the fullest and hopefully they will be inspired to do the same.

Of course, there may be a few people on my list that will judge my overweight self for indulging.   To them….be jealous, skinny and miserable!

All you need is love

Black tar paper with acrylic paint.  I took a class from Kent Youngstrom.  My question to him was how to make sure there was a focal point.  His inspiring idea was this white rectangle.

The other advice that he gave me was that you don’t need to create a focal point.  If you look at an abstract long enough, you will see one.

So what I will pass on to my artist friends is not to worry about your art.  Enjoy it.  Do what feels good to you.   And if it doesn’t feel good, don’t be afraid to paint over it!

As summer ends, thinking of spring

Forsythia

It’s Labor Day weekend and I look back and realize that I did very little ‘summer’ activities this year.  I was trying to remember when I last enjoyed a season in its true fashion.

Surprisingly, I did spring activities this past year for the first time in eons.   I planted and did yard work.  I actually dug in the dirt.  And enjoyed the dirt under my fingernails.

I encourage you to be more committed to the here and now.  This fall, do ‘autumn’ things.   Embrace the season!  Go leaf peeping, apple picking and trick or treating!

Look for beauty in the weeds

Weeds

blog

These were tall weeds in the back of the parking lot at Target. The sky was bright blue. There were a few beautiful wispy clouds hanging out. The wind was blowing these weeds around. To get the picture, I had to kneel down and look up. To most people, these just looked like dead weeds. To me, it made a parking lot in New England have the feel of a summer day somewhere in the MidWest.
